Is someone using your phone camera?
A green dot appeared at the top of the screen and you hadn't opened the camera. Or you've read that phones can film you without you knowing, and now you're eyeing the lens. iPhone and Android both show a light whenever an app uses the camera, and both can tell you which app it was.
Quick answer
On iPhone (iOS 14 or later), a green dot means an app is using the camera and an orange dot means the microphone. On Android 12 or later, a green indicator appears top right. Tap or swipe to see which app, then review camera permissions in Settings and turn off any app you don't trust.
What do the green and orange dots mean on iPhone?
Apple says that with iOS 14 or later, a green indicator means the camera, or the camera and microphone together, are being used by an app. An orange indicator means the microphone alone. If you turn on Differentiate Without Colour in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, the orange dot shows as a square.
Apple also says a message appears at the top of Control Centre when an app has recently used the camera or microphone. So if you missed the dot:
- Open Control Centre.
- Read the message at the top, which tells you an app recently used the camera or microphone.
- If it's an app you weren't using, review its permissions (below).
How do you see which apps used your iPhone camera?
Turn on App Privacy Report. Apple says that with iOS 15.2 or later, it shows how many times and when an app accessed sensors such as the camera and microphone in the past seven days. It only starts collecting once it's on, and the data stays encrypted on your iPhone.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down and tap App Privacy Report.
- Tap Turn On App Privacy Report.
- Come back later and look at Data & Sensor Access. Tap an app or data type to see more.
Apple says turning the report off clears its data, so leave it on while you're checking.
How do you check camera access on iPhone?
Apple requires apps to ask your permission before using the camera and to explain why. You can see every app that has asked and switch any of them off. An app doesn't appear in the list until it has asked.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Tap Camera.
- Turn off any app you don't use or don't expect to need the camera.
- Do the same for Microphone.
How do you tell if your Android camera is on?
Google says that on Android 12 and later, a green indicator shows in the top-right corner of the screen when an app uses the camera or microphone. Some steps vary by phone maker.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the indicator.
- Tap once to see which app or service is using the camera or microphone.
- Tap again to manage its permissions.
To cut off the camera for every app at once, swipe down twice and tap the camera access tile in Quick Settings, or go to Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls and turn off Camera access.
How do you see which apps used your Android camera?
Use the Privacy dashboard. Google says it shows which apps accessed permissions such as the camera, and when: the last 7 days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12.
- Open Settings and tap Security and privacy, or Privacy. You may need to tap Privacy again.
- Tap Privacy dashboard.
- Select Camera to see which apps used it.
- Tap an app to change its permission.
To see every app allowed to use the camera, go to Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy > Permission manager > Camera. Google says you can set camera access to Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don't allow.
Can someone access your phone camera without you knowing?
Apple and Google both say the indicator appears whenever an app uses the camera, so an app using it should show the light. The more realistic worry is an app on your phone that you didn't put there. The US Federal Trade Commission describes stalkerware as software someone installs on your device without your knowledge, which may let them see your photos and videos and turn on the microphone.
The FTC's signs include a battery that drains faster and unexpected data use, though each of those is a weak sign on its own. Stronger ones are someone knowing details of your private conversations or where you've been, or having had unsupervised access to your phone.
- Check camera and microphone permissions as above, and look for apps you don't recognise.
- If you think a partner or someone close installed something, the FTC advises talking to a domestic abuse adviser before removing it, because removal may alert them. In the UK, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge, is free on 0808 2000 247. In an emergency, call 999.

Where Failshot fits
Failshot uses your camera, so it's worth being clear. It photographs whoever unlocks your phone while Failshot is on, and the camera light shows whenever it takes a photo. You'll see the green dot at that moment, and Failshot will appear in your camera permissions like any app that uses the camera. It's for your own device only, and it never takes photos without the light showing.
On iPhone, Apple doesn't let any app see the Lock Screen or use the camera in the background. So you turn Failshot on and lock the phone, and whoever unlocks it lands in Failshot and is photographed. It doesn't photograph a wrong passcode at the iPhone Lock Screen. On Android, it also photographs a wrong PIN, pattern or password at the real lock screen.
Failshot doesn't detect hacking, spyware or remote access. It covers one thing: someone with your phone in their hands. Switching it off needs Face ID, your fingerprint or face on Android, or your own Failshot PIN plus your answer, never the phone's passcode. Photos stay on your phone, with optional email alerts. Failshot is coming soon to iPhone and Android.
