iPhone Duo Face ID or Touch ID? How it unlocks
iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, not Face ID. Apple says the fingerprint sensor is built into the side button and works whether the phone is open or closed. You can also unlock it with your Apple Watch, and you always need a passcode behind Touch ID.
Quick answer
iPhone Duo has Touch ID only, in the side button. Apple's spec pages list a "Fingerprint sensor built into the side button" and no Face ID. Set it up in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode after you've created a passcode. Apple also says you can unlock iPhone Duo with your Apple Watch.
Does iPhone Duo have Face ID?
No. Apple answers this on its own iPhone Duo page: iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, integrated into the side button, which Apple describes as an easy, secure and consistent way to authenticate iPhone Duo whether it's closed or open.
Apple's announcement on 9 September 2026 says the same, and the iPhone Duo spec pages in the UK and the US list a Touch ID fingerprint sensor among the sensors, with no Face ID. Apple's iPhone User Guide now lists two models with Touch ID: iPhone SE and iPhone Duo.
Where is the fingerprint sensor on iPhone Duo?
In the side button. Apple's specs say "Fingerprint sensor built into the side button", and Apple's controls page for iPhone Duo says you use the side button to turn off your iPhone, lock it, and unlock it or make purchases with Touch ID. Pressing and holding the side button summons Siri.
The same page describes the other controls: the volume buttons, which on iPhone Duo change direction as you rotate the phone unless you turn on Fixed Position Volume Controls, and Camera Control, which opens the camera.
How do you set up Touch ID on iPhone Duo?
You need a passcode first. Apple's iPhone User Guide says that to use Touch ID, you must also set up a passcode on your iPhone, and Apple's setup article says you'll be asked to set up Touch ID and a passcode during setup. To add it later:
- Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and enter your passcode.
- Turn on any of the options under Use Touch ID For, such as iPhone Unlock, then follow the onscreen instructions.
- To add another finger, tap Add a Fingerprint and follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple's general Touch ID article adds some tips for enrolling: make sure your finger and the sensor are clean and dry, touch the sensor without pressing, and keep lifting and resting your finger with small changes in position. When asked to adjust your grip, hold the phone as you normally would to unlock it and use the outer areas of your fingertip.
That article was written around the Home button and the iPad's top button. Apple says the onscreen instructions tell you which button to use, which on iPhone Duo is the side button.
How many fingerprints can you add?
Apple's Touch ID article says you can enrol up to five fingerprints, and that each new print may make recognition take slightly longer. Apple's iPhone User Guide gives an example: both thumbs and forefingers.
In Settings > Touch ID & Passcode you can tap a fingerprint to rename it, or tap Delete Fingerprint to remove it. Keep this list to your own fingers. Anyone with a fingerprint enrolled can unlock the phone.
What can Touch ID do on iPhone Duo?
Apple's iPhone User Guide says Touch ID can unlock your iPhone, authorise purchases and payments, fill in passwords automatically, and open password-protected apps. You choose which in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, under Use Touch ID For.
Apple's iPhone Duo spec pages say you can pay with Touch ID in shops, within apps and on the web with Apple Pay, and complete Apple Pay purchases made on your Mac.
What is Rest Finger to Open?
It's an accessibility setting that lets you unlock without pressing the button. Apple's iPhone User Guide says that on iPhone Duo you can unlock and open iPhone by resting your finger on the side button.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Side Button.
- Turn on Rest Finger to Open.
The same screen lets you change Click Speed and whether pressing and holding the button speaks to Siri.
Can you unlock iPhone Duo with an Apple Watch?
Yes. Apple's announcement says users can unlock iPhone Duo using their Apple Watch. We couldn't find iPhone Duo steps for it on Apple's support site on 30 October 2026, so we've left them out rather than guess. Apple's existing Apple Watch unlock article is written for Face ID models.
How secure is Touch ID compared with a passcode?
Apple's Touch ID security article puts the chance of a random fingerprint matching yours at 1 in 50,000 with one enrolled finger. It compares that with 1 in 10,000 for guessing a typical 4-digit passcode.
Touch ID stores only a mathematical representation of your fingerprint, protected by the Secure Enclave. Apple says it's never stored on Apple's servers and never backed up to iCloud. After five unrecognised fingerprints in a row, the phone asks for your passcode, so the passcode matters as much as the fingerprint. Apple suggests a Custom Alphanumeric Code, under Passcode Options, for better security.

Where Failshot fits
Touch ID is quick, but your passcode still opens the phone for anyone who knows it. Your passcode is the first layer. Failshot is the second.
Failshot for iPhone is coming soon. When it's out, you'll turn it on, leave Failshot open on its own screen and lock your iPhone, and whoever unlocks it into Failshot will be photographed. Get early access and we'll email you when Failshot for iPhone is ready.
Failshot for Mac is out now, for macOS 14 or later.
