iPhone Duo security features explained
iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, unlocks with Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID, and Apple says it works whether the phone is open or closed. Apple's support pages cover the rest, as they do for any iPhone: a passcode, Stolen Device Protection, Find My and Activation Lock. This guide is accurate as of 30 October 2026.
Quick answer
iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor built into the side button, and Apple says you can also unlock it with your Apple Watch. It's eSIM only. It runs iOS 27, so it has Stolen Device Protection, Find My with Activation Lock, Lost Mode and Find My via satellite. Turn each one on, and use a strong passcode.
What is iPhone Duo?
Apple introduced iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026 and calls it the first foldable iPhone. It has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and Apple says it comes with iOS 27.1. It went on sale on 23 October 2026 in more than 70 countries and regions, including the UK and the US, with 28 more following on 30 October.
On Apple's own stores it starts at £1,999 in the UK and $1,999 in the US for 256GB. The other capacities are listed at £2,199 and $2,199 (512GB), £2,599 and $2,599 (1TB), and £3,199 and $3,199 (2TB).
That price is why the security settings are worth ten minutes of your time on day one.
How does iPhone Duo unlock?
With your fingerprint. Apple's iPhone Duo page answers the question directly: iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, integrated into the side button, as a consistent way to authenticate whether it's closed or open. Apple's spec pages list a "Fingerprint sensor built into the side button" and no Face ID.
Apple's controls page for iPhone Duo says the side button turns the phone off, locks it, and unlocks it or makes purchases with Touch ID. Press and hold it for Siri.
Apple also says you can unlock iPhone Duo using your Apple Watch.
You still need a passcode. Apple's iPhone User Guide says that to use Touch ID, you must also set up a passcode, and Apple's Touch ID security article says the passcode is asked for after a restart, after more than 48 hours without unlocking, and after five unrecognised fingerprints in a row.
How does Apple protect your fingerprint?
Apple's Touch ID security article says Touch ID stores only a mathematical representation of your fingerprint, never an image of it. That data is encrypted and protected with a key available only to the Secure Enclave, a part of the chip built to protect your passcode and fingerprint data.
Apple says the fingerprint data can't be accessed by iOS or by apps, is never stored on Apple's servers, and is never backed up to iCloud. It puts the chance of a random fingerprint matching yours at 1 in 50,000 for a single enrolled finger, against 1 in 10,000 for guessing a typical 4-digit passcode.
What protects iPhone Duo if it's stolen?
Three things, all from iOS rather than anything unique to the Duo. Apple's pages describe them for every iPhone, and iPhone Duo runs iOS 27.
- Stolen Device Protection. Needs iOS 17.3 or later. Away from familiar places such as home or work, some actions need Touch ID with no passcode fallback, and changes like your Apple Account password need Touch ID, a one-hour wait, then Touch ID again.
- Find My and Activation Lock. Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My. After that, Apple says your Apple Account password is needed before anyone can turn off Find My, erase the phone, or reactivate and use it.
- Lost Mode. Marking the phone as lost locks it with your passcode and suspends Apple Pay cards and passes. Apple's Touch ID article says Lost Mode also stops Touch ID being used to unlock the device.
Apple's iPhone Duo spec pages also list Find My via satellite, alongside Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection.

What does eSIM-only mean for security?
iPhone Duo is eSIM only. Apple's UK spec page says it "uses advanced eSIM technology for more convenience and security" and isn't compatible with physical SIM cards. It supports dual eSIM, with two active at once.
With Stolen Device Protection on, Apple lists setting up or transferring an eSIM among the actions that need Touch ID, with no passcode fallback, away from familiar places.
What privacy features does Apple list?
On the iPhone Duo spec pages, Apple says every iPhone has secure authentication, apps need your permission to track your activity across other companies' apps or websites, and iMessage and FaceTime video calls are encrypted end to end.
For Apple Intelligence, Apple's announcement says it uses on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to protect your privacy.
Which settings should you check first?
Apple's pages point to the same short list.
- A passcode, ideally longer than six digits. Apple suggests Custom Alphanumeric Code under Passcode Options for better security.
- Touch ID with your own fingerprints only: Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.
- Two-factor authentication for your Apple Account: Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security.
- Find My: Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
- Stolen Device Protection: Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection.
