iPhone Duo broken screen: Apple's repair prices and AppleCare

iPhoneUpdated

Apple's estimate for an out-of-warranty iPhone Duo inner display repair is £999 in the UK and $999 in the US. With AppleCare, Apple lists the same repair at £79 or $99. The outer display, back glass and the inner display's cover layer each have their own, lower prices.

Quick answer

Apple's estimator lists iPhone Duo repairs separately: cover layer £49 or $49, outer display £389 or $379, inner display £999 or $999. With an AppleCare plan the excess is £19 or $19 for the cover layer, £25 or $29 for the outer display and £79 or $99 for the inner display. Apple inspects the phone to set the final price.

What can break on an iPhone Duo?

Apple's repair pricing names the parts. iPhone Duo has two screens: a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple's estimator prices them separately, along with the back glass and the inner display's cover layer.

Apple's handling guide explains the cover layer. The inner display on iPhone Duo has a nano-texture cover layer that is an integral part of the display. Apple says it reduces glare and reflections and protects the inner display from scratches and dents, and that you shouldn't try to remove it.

Apple's repair estimator doesn't list a separate hinge repair. If something other than the listed parts is wrong, ask Apple for an estimate rather than guessing from the list.

How much does Apple charge without AppleCare?

Apple says it will inspect the device to set the final fee. In the UK, the estimates "will be subject to VAT"; in the US they "may be subject to tax". A delivery fee may be added if Apple sends your phone away, and Apple Authorised Service Providers can set their own fees.

How much does it cost with AppleCare?

With an AppleCare plan you pay a fixed excess (UK) or service fee (US) for each repair. Apple's estimator lists these for iPhone Duo:

ServiceUKUS
Battery service£0$0
Cover layer damage£19$19
Back glass damage£25$29
Outer display damage£25$29
Inner display damage£79$99
Other accidental damage£79$99
Theft or loss£109$149

Apple says that for a service covered by an AppleCare plan, the fee is the same at Apple and at all Apple Authorised Service Providers. Apple's fees page lists the same iPhone amounts, with outer display and back glass damage on one line. Its AppleCare page adds that for iPhone Duo, a separate excess fee applies for replacing the cover layer.

Apple's AppleCare page says damaged displays and back glass can be repaired as often as you need. What a plan costs is in AppleCare+ for iPhone Duo.

Is a broken screen covered by the warranty?

Usually not. Apple says the Apple Limited Warranty covers your device against manufacturing issues for one year from the date you bought it, and doesn't cover accidental damage. Apple adds that its warranty is in addition to your rights under consumer law.

In the UK, Apple's AppleCare page says AppleCare+ benefits are separate from your right to a free repair or replacement, from the seller, of goods that don't conform with the contract of sale, and that under English law you have up to six years from delivery to use those rights, though various factors may affect your eligibility.

To see what covers your phone, go to Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty and tap your device, or enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com.

Where can you get iPhone Duo repaired?

Apple lists three routes:

  1. In person at a Genius Bar or an Apple Authorised Service Provider, where a technician inspects the phone and explains your options.
  2. By post. Apple sends a prepaid box so you can post the phone in.
  3. Express Replacement with AppleCare, where Apple sends you a replacement iPhone before you send yours back.

In the UK, Apple's AppleCare terms say Express Replacement for accidental damage is always charged at the other accidental damage excess, not the screen-only or back glass-only fee. Apple also says same-day service for iPhone is available in most major cities.

Apple guarantees its service and replacement parts for 90 days or the rest of your Apple warranty, whichever is longer.

How do you start a repair?

Apple's screen repair page starts with "Get started": you say what's going on with the screen, and Apple shows you fixes to try or helps you arrange a repair or replacement. If you have AppleCare, the page's AppleCare tab asks you to sign in to see your coverage and plan benefits. You can also start at support.apple.com/en-gb/repair or in the Apple Support app.

If you buy a used iPhone Duo later, Apple's Parts and Service History in Settings > General > About shows whether its display was replaced, and with what. Buying a used iPhone Duo explains the labels.

How do you avoid damaging the inner display?

Apple's handling guide has three points for iPhone Duo:

  1. Before you close iPhone Duo, remove anything from the inner display. Folding hard objects such as keys or coins inside it can damage the inner display.
  2. Keep sand and grit away from the hinge, and make sure the hinge is clean before you open the phone.
  3. Don't apply an external screen protector to the inner display. Apple says it's calibrated for the nano-texture cover layer, and a protector can compromise display performance.

Apple's spec page also says splash, water and dust resistance aren't permanent and that liquid damage isn't covered under warranty.

Where Failshot fits

A cracked screen is a repair. Someone getting into your Duo is a different problem. Your passcode is the first layer. Failshot is the second.

Failshot for iPhone is coming soon. When it's out, you'll turn it on, leave Failshot open on its own screen and lock your iPhone, and whoever unlocks it into Failshot will be photographed. Get early access and we'll email you when Failshot for iPhone is ready.

Failshot for Mac is out now, for macOS 14 or later.
