Is Google down, or is it just me? How to check

MacWindowsiPhoneAndroidUpdated

Check Google's own status pages first. The Google Workspace Status Dashboard covers Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet and other Workspace services, Google Cloud Service Health covers Google Cloud, and the Google Search Status Dashboard covers Search. If none of them lists a problem, the fault is more likely to be your browser, device or connection.

Quick answer

Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard at google.com/appsstatus for Gmail, Drive, Calendar or Meet, Google Cloud Service Health at status.cloud.google.com for Google Cloud, or the Google Search Status Dashboard at status.search.google.com for Search. If nothing is listed, try another browser, another network and another device.

Which Google status page should I check?

It depends on what isn't working.

  • Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, Chat: the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, at google.com/appsstatus. Google says it shows the current and past status of core Workspace services, and lists recent outages and disruptions. It uses four levels: Available, Service information, Service disruption and Service outage.
  • Google Cloud: Google Cloud Service Health, at status.cloud.google.com. Google says this public dashboard is used to communicate broad, severe incidents, and serves as an at-a-glance health check for the whole platform. For Google Cloud customers, Google calls Personalized Service Health their primary source for service disruptions relevant to them.
  • Google Search: the Google Search Status Dashboard, at status.search.google.com. It tracks four areas of Search: crawling, indexing, ranking and serving.

How do I check whether Gmail is down?

Google's Gmail help says: "To check the status of Gmail, open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard." Click any notification on the dashboard for more detail. Google says this can include an estimate of when the problem might be resolved, and that a final update is posted when it's fixed.

If Gmail shows "Temporary error (502)", Google says Gmail is temporarily unavailable, and that even though you can't sign in for the moment, "your messages and personal information are still safe". It says the error usually resolves itself quickly, so try signing in again in a few minutes.

What if Google's status page shows nothing?

Then work through your own end. These steps are from Google's "Gmail won't load" help page.

  1. Update your browser, or try another browser.
  2. Turn off extensions one by one, then reload. If your browser has an incognito or private mode, try that.
  3. Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try again.
  4. Restart your device.
  5. Turn your Wi-Fi or mobile data off and back on. On Wi-Fi, restart your router.
  6. Connect to another network.
  7. Try another device.

If you still have connection problems after these steps, Google suggests contacting your service provider or whoever runs the Wi-Fi network. To report an issue with a Google Workspace service, Google says to contact Workspace support.

What do sites like Downdetector show?

User reports. Downdetector says it "collects and displays user reports about service issues", and that it shows a possible issue when user reports are significantly higher than typical levels for that service.

That makes it useful for seeing whether other people are having trouble at the same moment. It is a count of what people report, not a statement from Google, so for what Google says is wrong, and when it's fixed, use Google's own status pages.

What happened to Google Cloud on 20 October 2026?

Google's Service Health page describes it as an incident in which multiple services had issues in its europe-west2 region, which is London. Its first update said the issue began on Monday 19 October at 23:08 Pacific time, which was 07:08 on Tuesday 20 October in the UK.

  • At 04:12 Pacific time, Google said: "Due to a power event we had suffered an outage within europe-west2-b zone."
  • It reported recovery for most workloads in europe-west2 as of 05:10 Pacific time, 13:10 in the UK.

Google's final incident report, published on 27 October 2026, gives the cause and does not describe a cyber attack. When we checked on 30 and 31 October 2026, the Google Workspace Status Dashboard's history listed no Workspace incidents between 19 and 21 October. Our guide to the 20 October Google Cloud outage has the full timeline, and we cover the cyber attack question in was the Google outage a cyber attack.

More questions

What time zone do Google's status pages use?

They differ. The Google Workspace Status Dashboard lists times in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The Google Cloud incident pages give times in US/Pacific. Convert before you compare them with the time your problem started.

Can I get alerts when Google services go down?

For Workspace, Google recommends subscribing to the Status Dashboard's RSS feed for the fastest outage alerts, even if Gmail itself is down. The link is at the bottom of the dashboard. There's also a JSON history feed for anyone who wants to process it automatically.

How far back does Google's status history go?

On the Workspace dashboard, select View history at the bottom. Google says it shows the previous 365 days by default, and up to 5 years of history for a service if you select See more next to its name.

Is Google Search down if a website won't load?

Not necessarily. The Search Status Dashboard covers Google Search's own crawling, indexing, ranking and serving. If Google Search itself loads but one website doesn't, the dashboard won't tell you about that site.

Gmail is down. Are my emails lost?

Google says that during a "Temporary error (502)", your messages and personal information are still safe, and the error usually resolves itself quickly.
